Rohypnol is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant not legally available in the United States. It is illegally abused as a muscle relaxer and sedative and has a negative reputation for being the “date-rape drug” because it is associated with sexual assaults.

An individual’s perception of Rohypnol and other drugs is greatly influenced by friends, family, the media, the law and other powerful sources of information. Individuals are constantly bombarded with contradictory opinions of drugs, as well as the negative and positive effects they have on users.

Influences that Develop Individuals’ Perceptions of Rohypnol

Though most may not know it by its official trade name, many people are familiar with the date-rape drug or know it by it’s other common street names, which include ruffies, Roche, forget-me pills, roaches, R-2 and Mexican Valium. The following factors influence the way that individuals perceive the drug and ultimately factor into their choice to use it or not:

  • Family – While there is no guarantee that a family member’s use of Rohypnol will affect the likelihood of his or her family members using it as well, many people feel it is acceptable to use a drug because a family member does it or accepts it. Others see the damage that Rohypnol use can cause and will be discouraged from using it. The people who are important in individuals’ lives help shape whom those individuals are and the decisions that they make. Family members can either encourage or discourage Rohypnol abuse with their attitude toward drugs.
  • Friends –  Friends play a powerful role in shaping an individual’s opinion of drug use, especially when that individual is looking for social acceptance. Many people never touched Rohypnol until they were pressured to use it and did so in order to be accepted.
  • Legal status – Rohypnol’s illegal status means there can be heavy consequences involved with selling, possessing and using the drug, which deters many individuals.
  • Media – While the media often portrays drug use as a way to relax, rebel and party – and does not always show the detrimental effects of getting high – Rohypnol in particular has gained infamy through the media, which has presented it in a negative light. The media’s portrayal of the date-rape drug has helped people be more aware of its dangers. However, people who might not have known about the date-rape drug otherwise can become acquainted with its nefarious uses through media portrayals and can take advantage of the knowledge.
  • Anti-drug groups – Anti-drug groups share the truth of Rohypnol use, discussing its potential negative effects on health, employment, relationships and other aspects of a user’s life in order to greatly discourage use.

Each of these sources can influence users’ perception of Rohypnol and their desire to use the drug.
